ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Under the phenomenon of the illusive architecture and the great painted decoration, especially during the Ancient Régime centuries, the VIth congress will be characterized by some qualifying themes. The first one is the of the primary of the ‘Varese school’ of painters, clearly recognizable among the different artistic languages developed in the State of Milan between XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries: it is based on artists and dynasties (Grandi, Baroffio, Giovannini) in close dialogue with the other Italian and European ‘schools’, but also with local figurist painters (such as Pietro Antonio Magatti and Giovanni Battista Ronchelli); one school also well documented in the areas of the present Piedmont and Tuscany regions. A second level of investigation will be that of the analysis of the presence of illusive painters in the whole State of Milan, subjected to the considerable cultural solicitations which characterized the phase of the Spanish government, then the age of the European Succession Wars, and later the reforming peace under the Habsburg-Austrian Empire. The third level of research is the Italian and European one, with particular focus on the activity of Swiss-Lombard Lake Artists in Central Europe, where they developed a real typological dominance. There is, finally, the wide subject (not only in Lombardy) of the Neo Baroque and Neo Rococo illusive painting which includes the whole XIXth and early XXth centuries, in balance between mimicry in the historical contexts and the fortunate reinvention of stylistic elements.
